'Good for jobs, bills and borders': UK and EU agree on landmark security and defence pact

Britain and the European Union have agreed a new security and defence partnership, paving the way for closer collaboration between the two sides amid rising global threats. The deal, confirmed during a summit in London, will allow the UK defence industry to take part in the EU’s proposed €150 billion Security Action for Europe (SAFE) fund, which is expected to support thousands of British jobs.

Downing Street described the agreement as a key step in formalising security cooperation and enhancing Europe’s collective safety. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the deal reflects a new chapter in UK-EU relations based on practical cooperation, not past political disputes. “It’s time to look forward,” he said, “and close deals in the national interest.”

The pact is part of a broader Strategic Partnership that includes streamlined food and drink trade, a new emissions agreement to boost energy security, and youth mobility schemes. Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds called it “a historic day” that would deliver jobs, security and prosperity for working people across the UK.
