President Donald Trump said he had a chat with incoming Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Carney "couldn't have been nicer". Trump said Carney would soon come to the White House, withing the next week, or less and the two leaders would speak on a deal.
“He called me up yesterday, he said, ‘Let’s make a deal,’” Trump said. “He was running for office, they were both — they both hated Trump, and it was the one that hated Trump, I think, the least that won. I actually think (Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre) hated me much more than the so-called Liberal," Trump said.
In his victory speech, Carney, however, sang a different tune than what Trump described his call with him was. Carney sounded the death knell for the US-Canada relationship as he said, "Our old relationship with the United States, which had brought prosperity to Canada, is over."
"The system of open global trade anchored by the United States, a system that Canada has relied on since the second World War, a system that, while not perfect, has helped deliver prosperity to our country for decades, is over," Carney said.
"These are tragedies, but it's also our new reality. We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons. We have to look out for ourselves and, above all, we have to take care of each other."
Trump was one of the reasons behind the snap election after Justin Trudeau had to resign. Soon after Trump's inauguration, Justin Trudeau flew to the US and faced the humiliation of Trump's proposal to make Canada its 51st state and Trudeau its Governor. With Trudeau's government falling, pushing Canada for the election, Trump made no change of heart and asserted that he is not trolling Canada when he talks about making it the 51st state, as he thinks it's the only feasible choice for Canada.
On Tuesday, the White House commented on Carney's win, with deputy press secretary Anna Kelly saying: "The election does not affect President Trump's plan to make Canada America's cherished 51st state."
