NEW DELHI: Veteran Congress leader and former Union minister Girija Vyas passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 79, weeks after sustaining burn injuries in a fire accident at her home. She died at a hospital in Ahmedabad.
Vyas had sustained serious burn injuries on March 31 while performing aarti at her residence in Udaipur. Her dupatta reportedly caught fire from a lamp, leading to critical injuries. She was initially admitted to a private hospital in Udaipur before being referred to Ahmedabad for advanced care.
Her brother, Gopal Sharma, confirmed her demise and said the funeral will be held in Udaipur on Friday.
Vyas was a prominent Congress leader, having served as a minister in both state and central governments, and as president of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee . She also headed the National Commission for Women , earning wide respect for her work in education, social justice, and women empowerment .
Leaders across party lines paid tribute to the senior Congress leader.
Congress MP and LoP in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi mourned her death, calling it "an irreparable loss." In a post on Facebook, he said, “Her contributions in the fields of education, social justice, and especially women empowerment have been truly significant. Her demise is an irreparable loss to all of us.”
Former Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot expressed shock and grief, writing on X, “Dr Girija Vyas made a great contribution to education, politics, and social service. Her untimely demise in such an accident is a big shock for all of us. I pray for peace to her soul.”
Congress leader Pawan Khera also shared his memories, saying, “Shocked at the news of the sad demise of Congress leader @DrGirijaVyas. Her poetry and her politics will always be remembered for their old-world charm. Travel well, Girija ji.”
