Dining out is often considered to be a leisure activity, where one tries to break the monotony of home-cooked food and try something different. But what if the dining experience leads to sickness and acute illness? Yes, you read it right! In a major crackdown, the Food Safety Task Force and Food Safety Officers (FSOs) inspected 10 outlets of the popular restaurant chain Absolute Barbeque across Hyderabad recently and found rotten fruits and pest infestation. Scroll down to read the details.
As per a post shared on X by Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana, FSOs inspected the outlets in 10 areas and found dirty utensils, unhygienic flooring and wash areas, fridges that had not been cleaned or defrosted, and degenerated chopping boards. In one of the outlets they found expired food items, rotten fruits and fungal growth. In another outlet officers found beetle-infested flour. As per the officers, some outlets had foods stored directly on the floor, alongside rat pads, and even amid rat feces and rusty racks.
Officials also noted lapses in labelling and display as per the Food Safety and Standards Regulations 2020. Items were seized, notices were issued to management, and food samples were lifted for further testing. The department confirmed that action has been initiated.
Another drive by the Food Safety Department was conducted under Gazetted Food Inspectors (GFIs), and Food Safety Officers (FSOs) covering both the GHMC area and all districts of Telangana to check the pizza outlets. During the inspection a total of 55 pizza outlets were inspected including 18 Pizza Hut outlets, 16 Domino’s outlets and 21 other local pizzerias and bakeries.
At 8 out of 18 Pizza Hut outlets the key lapses found included multiple outlets with license/jurisdiction, storing veg and non veg food together, unclean machinery, medical certificates issued to employees without proper examination, and no food license, sauce bottles without "use by" date and more.
At 10 out of 16 Domino's Pizza outlets, the experts found pest control overdue, no use of gloves and masks, no medical records for new staff, no segregation of veg/non-veg and more.
And at 6 out of 21 other outlets, they found unlabelled paneer/ bread/potato chips, rusty ovens, open cooking area without insect-proof mesh, uncovered vegetables on workstation, overused oil discarded, no pest control or medical records and more.
As per the X post, unsafe food materials were discarded on the spot. And the samples were lifted and instructions were issued to Food Business Operators (FBOs) to immediately rectify violations.
