According to the American Cancer Society's estimates, in 2025, about 13,360 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed, and about 4,320 women will die from cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in women between the ages of 35-44. However, if you keep on getting regular tests, you can prevent getting the disease.
The most popular test for cervical cancer screening is the Pap smear test that women get done at hospitals. But now, the FDA has approved the first at-home test for cervical cancer screening, called Teal Wand, according to the maker of the test, Teal Health.
According to the startup, the FDA's decision was based on a study in more than 600 women that showed self-collected samples using the company's test had the same performance as the clinician-collected samples.
The approval is "not just about an innovative new product, it's about finally giving women an option that makes sense for their lives — something that can be done quickly and comfortably at home," said Teal's co-founder and CEO Kara Egan.
What is the Teal Wand?
Teal Wand, the test, detects human papillomavirus (HPV), which is responsible for nearly all cervical cancers. Women can take the test at home and then send the sample to a certified lab for testing. The test includes a wand with a sterile sample ball that you have to use to swab the inside of the vagina.
How will the Teal Wand work?
According to the Teal Health website, the collection kits will be tested at Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment-certified labs. Once the test results are available, which the website states will be available within a week of mailing the samples, patients can access them through their Teal Health account and visit a Teal Health provider if necessary.
How and when can you get the Teal Wand?
The Teal Wand kits will be rolling out in California in June, as per the news release by Teal Health. Additionally, before the kit is mailed to your address, a virtual visit with a Teal Health provider will be required, as Teal Wand is a prescription. If deemed eligible, the kits will be shipped to your home.
Who can and can not use the Teal Wand?
The kits will be available for use for patients between the ages of 25 to 65, as per Reuters. They are not recommended for people who are pregnant, have a prior medical history of cancer in the reproductive system, HIV, DES exposure or immunosuppression and have had treatment for cervical precancer.
