OpenAI, the AI company behind ChatGPT, is reportedly venturing into the social media arena. The company, which changed how AI-based communication tools are perceived through its latest update, is reportedly developing a new social networking platform that is expected to compete with industry giants like Elon Musk’s X and Mark Zuckerberg’s Instagram.

Open AI might launch it's social media platform!

According to reports from CNBC and The Verge, OpenAI is currently in the early stages of this project, and while details are scarce, the company has built an internal prototype that focuses on ChatGPT’s image generation features, as per reports. This prototype includes a social feed, which has led to rumours that OpenAI may launch a standalone app or integrate it into the already popular ChatGPT platform.

The emergence of this new social network has come at a time of the growing popularity of OpenAI’s image generation tool powered by GPT-4o. This tool, which went live last month, and it helps users to create images with Studio Ghibli-style illustrations by simply putting a prompt.

Ghibli style images became a trend online!
As a result, social media feeds have been flooded with anime-style selfies, movie stills, and creative images in animated style. This generation of images in the Ghibli style turned into a wave of trend that has not only attracted users worldwide, but also could be the driving force behind OpenAI’s decision to dive into social networking, tapping into the world of memes, visual content, and user-generated creativity.

In an interview with TED last week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared information about the company’s growth. He revealed that ChatGPT’s user base was “growing very rapidly” and suggested that it had doubled within a few weeks. In fact, Altman noted that “one in ten people globally now use OpenAI’s systems”.

Users increased exponentially!

According to reports, as of February, OpenAI’s weekly active users surpassed 400 million, while its business users exceeded two million. The company’s growth trajectory is impressive, with 300 million weekly active users reported just a few months earlier.

Additionally, OpenAI recently raised $40 billion in its latest funding round, bringing its valuation to a staggering $300 billion. ChatGPT’s rapid growth also got the title of the fastest-growing web application in history, reaching 100 million monthly active users just two months after its release.

However, OpenAI’s pivot to a social network comes amid social media companies being under intense scrutiny. These companies face legal and regulatory challenges surrounding user safety, particularly concerning harmful content.

The news of OpenAI entering the social media space comes at a time when Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is testifying in an antitrust case brought by the Federal Trade Commission, which accuses Meta of acquiring smaller rivals to maintain dominance in the social media market. While OpenAI’s potential entry into social networking could shake the industry, it also raises questions about how the company will handle the responsibility of moderating content and ensuring user safety in an already complex digital landscape.

When will Open AI's social media platform be launched?

As per reports, even though Sam Altman had hinted at this move in February 2025, stating, "ok fine maybe we'll do a social app," suggesting that the company might enter the social media space to compete with Meta. As of now, OpenAI has not officially announced a specific launch date for its upcoming social media platform.
