Jaipur: With summer temperatures rising rapidly, state health department issued detailed guidelines Saturday for prevention and treatment of heat-related illnesses (HRIs) across hospitals and health centres, warning that heatwaves can be life-threatening without timely medical intervention.
"We have sent guidelines to all districts regarding symptoms, prevention, and treatment of HRIs. Awareness campaigns are also being run to educate people on how to stay safe during extreme heat," said Dr Narrottam Sharma, nodal officer, heatwave management, health department.
The advisory outlines a range of heat-related illnesses, from mild symptoms like heat rash and heat oedema to severe conditions such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The latter, officials warn, is the most dangerous form and can lead to death if not treated immediately.
The health department also cautioned that heat stress may worsen chronic conditions, including cardiovascular, respiratory, and kidney diseases. Medical facilities have been instructed to follow specific treatment protocols based on the severity of symptoms. Doctors across the state are urging people to prioritise hydration and stay cool.
"Drink plenty of water at regular intervals, even if you are not thirsty. Wear light, loose-fitting clothes and avoid tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks as they cause dehydration," said Dr Shalini Rathore, senior specialist (gynaecology), Mahila Chikitsalaya, Jaipur.
She also advised avoiding strenuous activities during peak afternoon hours. "Use fans, damp curtains, and shades to keep the environment cool. Keep windows shut during the day and open them at night," Dr Rathore added. The health department reiterated that prompt medical attention can prevent fatalities and urged the public to follow the safety guidelines strictly during the ongoing heatwave.
