Coimbatore: MP Ganapathy Rajkumar On Monday directed corporation officials to expedite the work on laying pipelines for the underground drainage (UGD) and the 24x7 water supply projects.
Earlier in the day, councillors from the east zone had at the zonal coordination meeting alleged that most of the sanctioned roads were delayed because of the pipeline laying work for the UGD and the water supply projects.
East zone chairperson Ilakummi Izhamselvi said, "While funds have been allocated and sanction has been received, roads are yet to be relaid. The city corporation wants to relay roads only after the completion of the UGD and water works."
While briefing on the status of the UGD project, corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran said 98% work was over on Kurichi-Kuniyamuthur stretch, 35% on Chinnavedapatti-Saravanampatti-Vellakinaru stretch, 70% in Ondipudur omitted areas and 40% on Vadavalli-Veerakeralam-Kavundampalayam stretch. He said 80% of the work on the 24x7 water supply project was also completed.
Commenting on the road work, he said the road repair work was provisioned only for corporation roads in most of the projects. "When we work on the National Highways (NH) and the State Highways (SH), we have to spend. For the NH, we directly execute it. In the case of the SH, we deposit the amount and they execute the work. There's a delay from the SH. After the deposit, it will take a minimum of 60 days for them to go for the tender. We have been requesting the SH secretary to assign contractors, who could take up the road work as we complete the pipeline work. This is still under their consideration."
