Send Push

The Central Government informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that several critical provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 will remain inactive for now.

These provisions include formation of the Central Waqf Council and Waqf Boards and de-notifying properties currently registered as waqf.

SC streamlines hearing process

To prevent courtroom overcrowding and ensure orderly proceedings, the Supreme Court has decided to hear only five selected petitions challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, along with Justices PV Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan, clarified that the remaining 65 petitions will be treated as interventions linked to these five main cases.

Key petitions to be heard

The five petitions chosen for hearing include challenges from prominent figures:

  • Arshad Madani (Principal, Darul Uloom Deoband)
  • Muhammad Jameel Merchant (Social Activist)
  • Mohammed Fazlurrahim (General Secretary, All India Muslim Personal Law Board)
  • Sheikh Noorul Hassan (Manipur MLA)
  • Asaduddin Owaisi (AIMIM Chief & Hyderabad MP)
  • The Supreme Court will revisit the matter on May 5.
