Warning as millions of retirees could be missing out on major pensions benefit

Retirees have been urged to check their eligibility for one major pensions boost as over one million pensioners could be missing out. Over 1.7 million elderly people receive additional financial support via Attendance Allowance, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The weekly payment, either £73.90 or £110.40, is designed to help those of State Pension age with day-to-day living expenses.

It is tailored specifically to support individuals with long-term disabilities, chronic conditions, and mental or physical health difficulties. However, many retirees may not even apply due to common misconceptions about the payments. Data from Policy in Practice revealed that in 2023, approximately 1.1 million pension age households were thought to be losing out on £5.2 billion worth of Attendance Allowance annually.

Those receiving the lower rate can get support valued at £3,842 annually, while those on the higher rate will collect £5,740.80.

You don't need a carer to be eligible for the claim, and the funds can be used on items that help maintain your independence rather than hiring a carer.

If you're approaching the end of life due to a terminal illness, there are different eligibility criteria. You might be able to receive Attendance Allowance more quickly and at a higher rate.

You cannot receive Attendance Allowance as well as Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Adult Disability Payment, Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance, or Armed Forces Independence Payment.

The payments are also not means-tested, meaning your earnings or savings will not impact what you receive.

To apply for Attendance Allowance, you'll need to fill out a lengthy claim form, and support is available from Citizens Advice and Independent Age.
