A UK market town which has been previously named "one of the worst places to live in" is all set for a major transformation. Huddersfield is a large market town in West Yorkshire, England, known for its rich industrial heritage and striking Victorian architecture.
The historic town is set to undergo a major transformation with a £250 million regeneration project aimed at revitalising its town centre over the next decade. This ambitious 10-year plan includes the development of a new library, museum, and a live entertainment venue, all designed to enhance cultural and community life. One of the latest additions to the project is a revamp of the town's well-known market, which will be modernised to attract more visitors and support local businesses.
Huddersfield Market, originally part of a wider regeneration plan launched in 2019, is now moving forward with a new planning application for redevelopment.
The proposed work, estimated at £16.5 million, has been submitted to Kirklees Council and outlines several upgrades. These include creating spaces for hot food vendors, adding a bar and a dedicated seating area, and making changes to improve accessibility throughout the site. The aim is to modernise the market and enhance its appeal as a vibrant community space.
Councillor Graham Turner said the plan aims to make the market a "place full of opportunities to test ideas, eat, learn, be entertained, and most importantly create a space that facilitates economic growth and support traders", reports The Sun.
He said: "Huddersfield has and always will be a market town - these improvements will allow the market to continue being a key place for the people of Huddersfield to visit, and a space where local businesses can thrive for many more years to come."

The work is to kick off in 2026 once the planning application is approved. As per the plan, the indoor Queensgate Market will be converted into a food hall and library.
The former Grade II-listed library will be repurposed into a museum and art gallery, adding cultural value to the town.
Plans also include a new outdoor space for up to 3,000 people and a live music venue with a 2,200-person capacity, aimed at boosting entertainment options.
Transport hubs like the rail and bus stations will be upgraded to improve connectivity, while estate buildings will be converted into homes to increase the town centre's population.
