Roy Keane was left rolling his eyes at Ian Wright's suggestion that fans will accept this season's failures if it ends with silverware. United's current campaign has been a rollercoaster ride, leaving fans and pundits alike in a state of bewilderment.
The Red Devils have had a dismal run in the , plummeting to as low as 14th place due to a string of lacklustre performances - however, they are still contenders for the Europa League title. Ruben Amorim's side sit in 13th position in the league table with more defeats than wins this season - 10 victories, eight draws and 13 losses - meaning their up-and-down form has been a hot topic of discussion. domestic cup runs have also been disappointing, with Tottenham Hotspur eliminating them from the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage, and Fulham knocking them out of the FA Cup in the fifth round via penalties.
Yet, Arsenal legend Wright believes there's still a glimmer of hope for United fans as they prepare for the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash against Lyon on Thursday evening. With history favouring United, who have never lost to Lyon in European competition, the question remains: would a Europa League triumph be enough to appease disgruntled fans?
Wright certainly thinks so, as he shared his thoughts on the podcast alongside former United stars Roy Keane and Gary Neville and women's football icon Jill Scott. Scott sparked the discussion by referring to United's position in the league last season, highlighting their eighth-place finish alongside their FA Cup victory over rivals Manchester City.
She said: "See, so you can kind of go 'it's all right', but I do think that 13th, 14th is terrible."
While Keane and Neville nodded in agreement, Wright was less inclined to see it as a disaster. "It's not terrible if you've got a trophy. I would take that at Arsenal," he said.
His view left others around the table rather taken aback as Wright added: "If Arsenal had that season with everyone on about the manager not winning [anything]. If we could win the Europa League I'd take it." Keane couldn't hide his astonishment at such an outlook, even jokingly asking: "But you're winning the Champions League this year?"
Despite Arsenal trailing Liverpool by 11 points at the peak of the Premier League standings, a commanding 3-0 triumph against the current Champions League title holders, Real Madrid, has boosted morale amongst their fan base, particularly due to the nature of the win.
The match continues to be a talking point for both fans and critics, especially after Declan Rice's stunning free-kick double secured him the man of the match honours.
When Scott asked: "But with a 14th league position, would you take it?" Wright responded: "Yeah I'd take it, because at the end of the day the fans would be happy with something, wouldn't they? I don't know how the Man United fans will feel."
The opinions from the other hosts were obvious, as Keane couldn't help but roll his eyes and shake his head in response, making it abundantly clear that a Europa League trophy wouldn't cut it for him by the season's end.
Neville then noted the importance of a potential Champions League victory for Arsenal fans, as he said: "It would be massive for Arsenal fans to win the Champions League. For Mikel Arteta to win the Champions League would be massive."
Scott added: "Champions League is another ball game though, isn't it?"
Sensing a moment to sneak in a subtle dig at Wright's expense, Keane said: "He'd be crying his eyes out. You'd be on the bus with them, wouldn't you?".
will be making their final preparations to face Lyon on Thursday evening at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, with kick-off set for 8pm. The return leg will be played at Old Trafford next Thursday, April 17, with the same kick-off time.
