A travel expert has suggested an underrated medieval city in Europe for Brits to visit, and it's not too far away. Europe is a bustling continent with so many historical towns and cities, many of which attract Brits who fly out for city breaks abroad. Popular choices include Paris and Prague, but there are many towns and cities across the continent that many tourists haven't heard of. And they could be seriously missing out.

One of those towns, which has amazing medieval architecture and interesting history, is located in France. You will find Colmar in north-eastern France, close to the border of Germany. Looking at the city, you might just feel like you have been transported back in time to a European city akin to something from a fairytale. It is a relatively small city of just 67,000 people and is characterised by its colourful houses and its grand church, not to mention its quaint streets.

Joanne Lynn, Head of European Product at Riviera Travel revealed some hidden European gems that people should consider visiting around this time of the year. Her first suggestion was Colmar.

She explained: "Outside of the popular well-travelled destinations across Europe, there are a host of hidden gems begging to be uncovered. Each city provides a unique travel experience while offering the opportunity to learn more about local culture and cuisine.

"My first hidden gem recommendation is Colmar, a city situated in the north-east of France. It's a charming location known for its combination of traditional architecture, picturesque canals and stunning vineyards. With narrow cobblestone streets and historic buildings, the city retains much of its medieval charm, creating the backdrop for an educational cultural trip. This shoulder season, Colmar is a must-visit, in my opinion."

Colmar is a city to visit if you like good food, interesting architecture and history. The top-rated things to do in the small city include Little Venice, where you will walk along canals and over bridges, experiencing the fairytale charm of the city.

There is also the Old Town, where you can shop for locally-made goods and relax in cute cafes. Plus, there are plenty of options for dinner here. There are also some wine tours of the city, which will be attractive to tourists visiting France, one of the wine capitals of the world.

Colmar is also home to a lovely market and some interesting museums, providing you with plenty to do during a couple of days there. Colmar has been a hit with people who have visited it previously.

One Reddit user shared: "I was there for the Christmas markets in December! So quaint! Loved Strasbourg too." Another said: "Colmar is beyond amazing, as are the surrounding villages."

A third commented: "It is ridiculously charming! I was there for the Christmas market after a light dusting of snow- it was like a ceramic Christmas village come to life."

Colmar is located relatively close to the larger French city of Strasbourg. This means that it can be made into a day trip if you are staying in the neighbouring city.
