'I'm a car expert - this is the one car I'd buy for under £5k'

In 2025, second-hand car buyers have an incredible variety to choose from when heading to their local dealer. Petrol or diesel? Hybrid or electric? SUV or a hatchback? Or how about something a little more fun? With the summer season now over and the nights drawing in, valuations on convertibles are generally on the decline.

Some might be baffled at the thought of securing a convertible ahead of the winter, but the lower prices mean now is the perfect time to swoop down and strike a deal. There's probably no better budget convertible on the market than the trusty Mazda MX-5. As well as being dependent and super reliable with models usually lasting well over 100,000 miles, these Japanese staples are also super fun behind the wheel.

The rear-wheel drive model's lightweight construction and responsive handling make it a pure thrill, especially when the roof is down and wind hitting your face. Inside, the low seating position adds to the sports car feel with drivers practically sitting on the floor, peering over the wheel.

There aren't as many luxuries here and practically no storage, but a CD player is more than enough for long drives in the countryside. The Mazda MX-5 is also one of the cheapest cars to insure, meaning road users can get behind the wheel for a fraction of the cost of other, more costly sports cars.

The only drawbacks is that MX-5 models tend to be susceptible to rust, particularly underneath the floor, which can be hard to access due to its low ride.

Areas such as the car wheel arches, behind the seats, and even the boot have also been known to develop rust problems later in life. Those opting for a soft-top convertible should also be careful in the winter, as dampness is likely to be a concern.

Mazda MX-5 SE models can be picked up on AutoTrader for around £5,000, while older models are slightly cheaper. Those looking for the more modern Skyactiv models are likely to pay a lot more, with values still holding at over £10,000.
