It's been a hot summer across the UK, putting significant strain on the plants in our gardens. The scorching temperatures impact the growth of plants and can cause them to wilt or even die.
According to the latest statistics from the Met Office, the UK has "almost certainly" had its hottest summer on record. The mean temperature currently stands at 16.13C, which is higher than the previous warmest summer in 2018 where the mean was 15.76C. The good news for gardeners is that rain showers are now forecast across the nation which will give plants some much-needed respite.
As reported by GB News, a horticultural expert has revealed a timely hack to help revive plants that have suffered in the summer heat. David Denyer, from Eflorist, is urging gardeners to capitalise on the upcoming showers.
The Met Office 5-day forecast for the UK is expecting showers across the UK during the remainder of this week. There will be a heavy band of rain in the west tonight (Tuesday, August 26) before the downpours continue to spread east tomorrow and into Thursday and Friday.
Mr Denyer said: "Rainwater is one of the best things you can use to water your plants. It is naturally soft and slightly acidic, which is much closer to what many plants are used to in the wild."
Substances such as chlorine, fluoride and calcium in mains water can lead to health problems in plants. Mr Denyer warned tap water usage can cause long-term effects to plants.
He explained: "You may notice yellowing leaves, brown tips, or salt crusts on the surface." He added: "Bedding plants, seedlings, and newly planted flowers are some of the first to struggle in a sudden heatwave," before continuing: "These outdoor plants will make the most of the rain at this time of year."
Proper rain collection methods can help gardeners make the most of the upcoming showery days. Mr Denyer recommends covered containers to prevent contamination from debris and insects.
He said: "If you are collecting rainwater, keeping it clean is key. Rainwater in a container that has been left open for too long can stagnate, especially in warm weather."
The expert continued: "Something as simple as a clean pan or basin left outside while it's raining will do the job nicely."
This Evening and Tonight:Showers persisting in the north and west, with a band of heavy rain and stronger winds reaching the west later in the night. Largely dry with clear spells elsewhere. Feeling fresher than recent nights.
Wednesday:The rain band, perhaps thundery in places, will continue to spread eastwards throughout the day, with sunshine and showers following. Warm in the east, but near average temperatures elsewhere.
Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:Remaining changeable with temperatures for most around average for late August. Rain most frequent and heaviest across the west, with a risk of thunder and gusty winds at times.
