Gardeners who are in their garden should complete one job in the month of June, according to experts. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has for green-fingered Brits who are passionate about growing the tasty vegetable ahead of next month.
Peas are a common vegetable to grow in British gardens and they are a staple in many British meals. According to the RHS, peas need "staking with pea sticks, netting or pruned garden twigs". The practice of staking peas is when gardeners use sticks or other supports to help pea plants climb and grow upright, rather than letting them sprawl.
Peas can be sown between January and July as well as in the months of October and November. Meanwhile, they should be planted in March April and May.
Peas growing in the UK are then harvested between June and October. When it coems to growing peas, Gardener's World said: "Stake young plants with pea sticks to support their growth, and feed weekly with a high-potash fertiliser, once flowers appear. Harvest peas after around three months."
By staking, pea plants will be less likely to bend and break. Meanwhile, British weather can pose a threat to peas, especially taller varieties.
For this reason, staking is important as it provides them with more support when it comes to withstanding wind and rain. Additionally, they will be easier to harvest when they grow upwards.
Expert said: "As the young sweet pea plants begin to grow, tie them into the vertical support. It's really important to tie in your sweet peas as they'll grow more quickly and make stronger plants if they are tied in regularly. Do this twice in the first month and then more often when they start to romp away."
Among the other tips that the RHS suggests gardeners complete in June is regularly feeding ridge cucumbers with a liquid tomato feed and continuing to earth up maincrop potatoes.
Additionally, gardeners should water tomatoes and peppers regularly to prevent blossom end rot - a symptom of calcium deficiency due to erratic water supply.
