Samruddhi Mahamarg Update: Mumbai To Nagpur Expressway's Final Stretch To Be Inaugurated On Maharashtra Day

Mumbai: In an upcoming development, Maharashtra is poised to achieve a significant infrastructure milestone on May 1, known as Maharashtra Day, or on May 2 with the anticipated opening of the last 76-kilometer segment of the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway.

This final stretch, connecting Igatpuri to Amane, will finalize the extensive 701-kilometer expressway that links Mumbai to Nagpur, greatly enhancing travel and connectivity throughout the state. Additionally, the south-bound lane of the Thane Creek Bridge is expected to be operational on the same date.

Anil Gaikwad, the Managing Director of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), has confirmed that both projects are fully prepared for inauguration. Their launch is expected to greatly improve road access to essential locales like Navi Mumbai, Pune, and the under-construction Navi Mumbai International Airport. These advancements are anticipated to enhance safe and swift travel across the region.

The Samruddhi Expressway, formally known as the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, has been constructed in phases over the years. Initially proposed by former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the first segment—from Nagpur to Shirdi—was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2022. Following that, the Shirdi to Bharvir section was opened in May 2023 by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and subsequently, the Bharvir to Igatpuri segment became operational in March 2024 under MSRDC Minister Dada Bhuse.

In addition to shortening travel times between key cities in Maharashtra, the expressway is expected to act as a catalyst for economic progress. The final segment of the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway is scheduled to be unveiled on Maharashtra Day.

There is speculation that Prime Minister Modi might be invited once more to inaugurate this last section, especially since he is already planned to be in Mumbai on May 1 for the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit at the Bandra Kurla Complex. The state may wish to take advantage of this occasion to merge the two events into a symbolic celebration.

The inauguration of the final section of the Samruddhi Expressway signifies the successful completion of a transformative infrastructure initiative. It not only promises better mobility but also new avenues for economic development and regional advancement across Maharashtra.
