Heavy rains have been continuing in many parts of Kerala, disrupting daily life. On Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for six districts in the state. The IMD also said the monsoon is likely to arrive in Kerala within the next two days, and there could be widespread rain across the state over the next week.
The orange alert was issued for Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts for the day.
Additionally, the IMD gave a red alert for Kannur and Kasaragod from May 24 to May 26, and for Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad on May 25 and 26. Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts will also have a red alert on May 26.
Orange alerts are expected in nine districts on May 24, seven districts on May 25, four districts on May 26, and six districts on May 27.
To explain, a red alert means very heavy rain, with more than 20 cm expected in 24 hours. An orange alert means very heavy rain between 11 cm and 20 cm, and a yellow alert means heavy rain between 6 cm and 11 cm.
The IMD also warned of strong winds along the coastal and inland areas and advised people, especially fishermen, to be careful.
Fishing has been banned along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts from Friday until May 27 as a precaution.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) said high waves of up to 3.5 metres could hit some coastal areas of Kerala on Saturday.
