IPL 2025: Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South African cricketer Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The franchise confirmed that Brevis will join them for a sum of ₹2.2 crore.

The 21-year-old right-handed batter has played 81 T20 matches, scoring 1,787 runs, with a highest score of 162. He made his T20 International debut for South Africa in 2023 and has played two matches for the national side so far. Brevis was earlier a part of the Mumbai Indians (MI), where he featured in 10 matches.

Known for his aggressive batting style, Brevis has built a reputation through franchise tournaments across the world. He has played in the IPL, Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Major League Cricket (MLC), and South Africa’s SA20. In the SA20, he was the sixth-highest run-scorer with 291 runs at a strike rate of 184.17, helping MI Cape Town clinch their first title.

Brevis is also known as Baby AB for his playing resemblance to AB de Villiers, although he has expressed dislike for the name.

Apart from T20 leagues, Brevis has also made a promising start in first-class cricket. He has scored three centuries in 17 matches and averages 38.14.

His addition to CSK comes at a difficult point in the season. At the halfway stage of IPL 2025, the five-time champions are in unfamiliar territory—struggling at the bottom of the table with just two wins from their first seven games.

CSK’s primary concern this season has been their underwhelming batting performance. Ruturaj Gaikwad, one of their most dependable batters in recent seasons, played the first five matches before an elbow fracture ruled him out, dealing a major blow to the team’s campaign. Rachin Ravindra has been the side’s top scorer with 186 runs at an average of 31 and a strike rate of 132.85, but the batting unit overall has lacked rhythm and attacking intent.

In six out of their seven matches so far, CSK have batted second, but have only managed to chase down the target twice—and both of those wins came when the target was under 170. The middle order has failed to contribute consistently, and there appears to be an increasing dependence on MS Dhoni to finish matches. At 43, the continued reliance on Dhoni in the final overs is raising concerns about the team’s balance and the depth of its batting line-up.

With Dewald Brevis stepping in, CSK will hope the young South African can inject some much-needed firepower and help the franchise recover from a disappointing first half of the season.
