BCCI sacks coaches Abhishek Nayar and T Dilip after India's poor performance in Australia

The Board of Control for Cricket in India ( BCCI) has decided to part ways with assistant coach Abhishek Nayar and two other coaching staff members, in a major shakeup following India's disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, ANI has reported citing sources.

The BCCI has also relieved Fielding Coach T Dilip and Trainer Soham of their duties, as the governing body had previously hinted at a review of personnel who have completed a three-year tenure with the national team.

This decision comes amidst a series of poor results for the Indian cricket team, particularly after their defeats in the Test series against New Zealand and Australia last year.

Nayar's role has been under scrutiny since the team's historic win in Perth was followed by a lack of momentum, leading to a 1-3 series loss. His 'apparent touch' with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where he was an assistant coach and worked with Gambhir, raised concerns among BCCI officials.

Nayar, alongside former Netherlands star Ryan Ten Doeschate, joined Team India's support staff during the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, but their contributions have not met expectations. Interestingly, Nayar's removal comes just eight months after he assumed the role of assistant coach.

The Rohit Sharma-led side faced immense scrutiny during the BGT, which they lost 3-1, and not only was the team's performance below expectations, but reports of internal discord and dressing room leaks further exacerbated the situation.

Interestingly, Nayar's removal comes just eight months after he assumed the role of assistant coach.

South Africa's Adrian Le Roux will step in as the new trainer, taking over Soham's responsibilities, while the other two positions remain vacant for now.

Le Roux, who is currently associated with the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Punjab Kings (PBKS), has a rich history in the IPL, previously working with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) from 2008 to 2019.

In addition to the coaching changes, the BCCI's apex committee has also been deliberating on potential adjustments to the annual central contracts for players.

While official announcements are expected only after May 25, speculations suggest that high-profile players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja could be moved out of the A+ category due to their recent retirements from T20 internationals.

However, conflicting reports indicate that major removals from the A+ category may not occur, with alterations likely to be seen in other contract levels.

Amidst these changes, the BCCI has also issued strict guidelines for the Senior Men's Cricket Team aimed at enhancing discipline and promoting team unity during domestic and international tours. These guidelines address travel logistics, baggage limits, and family visits, reinforcing the expectation that players travel with the team for all matches and practice sessions to maintain cohesion and discipline. Any exceptions to this rule must receive prior approval from the head coach and the chairman of the selection committee.
