Despite layoffs and job shortages in the US tech sector, employment in the healthcare and social assistance sectors is growing. In August 2025, there were 31,000 new jobs in healthcare and 31,000 in social assistance.
The US employment market is currently undergoing significant changes and challenges. The growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) has had the greatest impact on the technology sector. Reports of layoffs have emerged from many large and small companies. New hiring in the tech sector is also currently stagnant. Only 22,000 new jobs were created in the US in August 2025, indicating a slowdown in the economy.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the US unemployment rate is 4.3%, and approximately 7.4 million Americans are unemployed. The labor force is only 62.3%, indicating that growth is slowing in many sectors. While competition for jobs has increased in some sectors, there are also some sectors where jobs are abundant and candidates are not facing difficulty finding employment.
In August 2025, the healthcare sector created 31,000 new jobs. This sector has become the largest employment-generating sector. Ambulatory healthcare services, hospitals, nursing, and residential care facilities have seen the highest job growth. Ambulatory services alone have created over 13,000 jobs.
Nearly 500,000 new jobs have been created in the healthcare sector over the past year. This represents more than a third of the total new jobs created in the country. This means that the healthcare sector has become the most stable and fastest-growing sector for employment in the United States.
This increase in employment in the healthcare sector reflects increased public attention to healthcare. The need for ambulatory care for patients, nursing staff in hospitals, and other healthcare professionals is constantly increasing.
In addition to healthcare, the social assistance sector also created approximately 16,000 new jobs in August. According to government reports, approximately 333,000 new jobs have been created in this sector over the past year.
Employment in this sector has primarily occurred in family services, child care, community food and housing assistance, emergency relief, and vocational rehabilitation. The growth of these jobs reflects the increasing attention American society has paid to the needs of family, social cohesion, and community. People are not only improving their economic situation but also contributing to the support and care of vulnerable members of society.
