Ruben Amorim has told Enzo Maresca exactly what he wants to hear ahead of Manchester United's clash against Chelsea. The Club World Cup champions will lock horns with the Red Devils at Old Trafford this afternoon as they look to return to winning ways.

Chelsea's unbeaten start to the new season came to an end on Wednesday night when they lost 3-1 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League. The Blues have only had a couple of days to prepare for the United match, so Maresca could be inclined to rotate his starting lineup.

United, however, have had a week to recharge their batteries after a humiliating defeat to Manchester City. Erling Haaland fired Pep Guardiola's side to a 3-0 win, with the result raising even more questions about the Red Devils' setup.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the Chelsea match, Amorim was asked if he plans to change his system in response to last weekend's demolition. Telling Maresca exactly what he would've wanted to hear, the United boss stuck to his guns.

As quoted by the Manchester Evening News, Amorim said: "No one, not even the Pope will change… This is my job. This is my responsibility. This is my life. So, I will not change that.

"But I will change the system, there will be an evolution, but we need to make all the good steps. If I'm a player and I have a coach who, with a lot of pressure, it doesn't matter if he's all around the world, is saying, 'you need to change the system,' and I'm going to change in this moment, they will look at me in a different way.

"So, everything, when you think about the impact that any decision is going to have on the team, everything is important. So, I will say the same thing: this will have an evolution.

"I'm doing things my way. Some guys do it in a different way. But it will change. So, I hope to have the time to change! But it will change."

Speaking to reporters at Cobham on Friday, Maresca was full of praise for Amorim. Leaping to the United boss' defence, he said: "The only thing I can say is that I really appreciate Ruben.

"I've watched Ruben's games since he was in Sporting. He's a magnificent manager. Like all the managers, when you start a new project, sometimes you can struggle a little bit more or a little bit less, but at the end you're going to struggle. I don't have any doubt that he's a fantastic manager."

On whether this weekend is a good opportunity for Chelsea to end their five-game winless streak at Old Trafford, Maresca said: "I think it's always difficult to play United away in their stadium, Old Trafford.

"So I don't think that now is the right moment or next year will be the right moment or last year was the right moment. It's always difficult. It's a difficult team, it's a difficult stadium.

"I watch the games that they play this season. Some of the games are not a real result in terms of even City game. Until 1-0, 2-0 they were in the game. When the game wasn't in there, they had a few chances to score and to go ahead on the result. So it will be a tough game."
